Bio

Few coaches bring the depth of experience, championship success, and impact on student-athletes that John Rodenberg brings to Indian Hill.

Since joining Indian Hill in 2022, Coach Rodenberg has shared lessons developed over nearly four decades in education-based athletics. With more than 200 career victories, four state championships in three different states, 11 league championships, and 14 Coach of the Year honors, his career places him among the most accomplished high school football coaches in the region.

Yet for Coach Rodenberg, the greatest measure of his career has never been trophies or rankings. It has always been the opportunity to positively influence young people and teach them how to pursue meaningful goals as part of a team.

A Cincinnati Football Journey

A Cincinnati native, Coach Rodenberg attended La Salle High School, where he played football before continuing his athletic career at Capital University.

He went on to attend Capital University, the University of Cincinnati, and Xavier University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Health Education.

Coach Rodenberg began his coaching career in 1986, launching a journey that would take him to successful programs throughout Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

His coaching stops have included:

  • Roncalli High School

  • Lawrence Central High School

  • Archbishop Moeller High School

  • Roger Bacon High School

  • Covington Catholic High School

  • Archbishop McNicholas High School

  • La Salle High School

  • Indian Hill High School

He also served as an Assistant Athletic Director at Lawrence Central, giving him additional experience in the leadership and administration of education-based athletic programs.

A Championship Career

Over the course of his career, Coach Rodenberg has built an extraordinary record of success.

His accomplishments include:

  • Four State Championships in three different states

  • 11 League Championships

  • More than 200 career victories

  • 14 Coach of the Year honors

  • More than 100 student-athletes coached who continued competing at the collegiate level

  • Head Coach of the North/South All-Star Game

  • Head Coach of the East/West All-Star Game

  • Moeller High School Hall of Fame inductee

  • A No. 3 national ranking in 2012

  • Multiple appearances in the USA Today national rankings

While those accomplishments demonstrate sustained excellence across multiple programs, Coach Rodenberg believes successful coaching is ultimately about much more than what appears in the record book.

Why He Coaches

Coach Rodenberg entered coaching with a clear purpose: to have a positive impact on young people.

"I wanted the opportunity to positively affect young men and teach them how to accomplish goals in a team environment."

Throughout his career, that mission has remained constant.

Whether coaching a championship team, developing an individual athlete, or helping a student learn how to push through a difficult challenge, Coach Rodenberg sees athletics as an opportunity to prepare young people for life.

Coaching Philosophy

For Coach Rodenberg, education-based athletics should help develop the complete person.

The goal is to create well-rounded young people who understand that the habits required for athletic success can also help them succeed in their education, careers, families, and communities.

His coaching philosophy is centered around three fundamental values:

Self-Discipline – Learn to consistently do what is required, even when no one is watching and regardless of how you feel in the moment.

Integrity – Make decisions based on character and do what is right.

Attitude – Approach challenges with the mindset that your response and effort are always within your control.

These principles have served as the foundation of Coach Rodenberg's programs throughout his career.

Fundamentals First

Coach Rodenberg describes his approach as fundamentals-based.

Before athletes can consistently perform at a high level, they must master the details that create success. Whether in football, strength and conditioning, or life, fundamentals provide the foundation upon which everything else is built.

Just as importantly, he teaches student-athletes the importance of balance.

His goal is to help young people understand how to work hard, compete hard, and still enjoy the experience.

That balance is an important part of what he hopes every athlete takes away from being part of a program he coaches.

The Experience Matters

When former players look back on their high school careers, Coach Rodenberg hopes they remember more than victories and championships.

"I hope they walk out of their respective high schools knowing they had a great experience and feeling capable of accomplishing any goal they set for themselves."

That belief reflects his broader purpose as a coach. Athletics should challenge students, but those challenges should ultimately leave them more confident and prepared for whatever comes next.

Defining Success

Despite a career filled with championships and significant accomplishments, Coach Rodenberg defines success in much simpler terms:

"Being able to look in the mirror knowing that you gave your best effort."

That standard applies regardless of the final score.

For Coach Rodenberg, success is knowing that you prepared, competed, and responded to challenges with everything you had.

Why Indian Hill?

Coach Rodenberg believes one of Indian Hill's greatest strengths is the support student-athletes receive throughout the district.

"What makes Indian Hill special is the great support from the administration to help kids become the best version of themselves."

That commitment to the development of the whole student aligns closely with his own philosophy and allows athletics to serve as another extension of the educational experience.

Beyond Coaching

Away from athletics, Coach Rodenberg enjoys anything that presents a fitness challenge and exploring new restaurants.

Even after nearly four decades in coaching, his competitive spirit and desire to challenge himself remain central to who he is.
